Nick Nice - Guilty Pleasures @Shamrock
May 11, 2013 06:30 AM PDT
The Shamrock has been a Madison institution since it opened in 1985. It's often referred to as the 'Cheers" of LGBT-friendly bars... to me it's a place where everyone from any walk of life is made to feel welcome due to it's unpretentious atmosphere and friendly staff. The cheap drink specials always help too! I also dj there every Thursday night (10pm-close) and it allows me to play all sorts of fun guilty musical pleausres that I might not play at other shows. From disco to 80's to house classics to current dance I tend to cover a lot of musical ground. Enjoy the mix and stop down to party with us sometime! 225 Minute LIVE Mix (541.5mb file/320k CBR) Nick Nice & DJ Umi - Get Phoqued! (May 2013)May 10, 2013 09:39 AM PDT
For this month's edition of Get Phoqued! (at the Cardinal in Madison, WI) I invited one of Madison's many amazing up & coming young dj's. Umi has an innate sense for house music, especially the type you hear at 5 in the morning when everything just makes sense. We traded off throighout the night doing 30-40 minute sets & this is the whole evening. So much good music & happy dancefloor vibes....

The kickoff to the holiday 420 weekend was full of killer house music from start to finish. This is my opening set for a non-stop evening of dancing at the beautiful Majestic Theatre in Madison, Wisconsin. A great party with sets by myself, Orchard Lounge & Derrick Carter. House music all night long!

118 Minute LIVE Mix (283.5mb file/320k CBR) Nick Nice-Get Phoqued! (February 2013 edition)
February 14, 2013 07:28 AM PST
It's always a blast to Get Phoqued! up once a month at my regular gig at the Cardinal (in Madison, WI). It's a night where I get to let loose musically, take zero requests and do a nice long set full of deep beats to keep you dancing the whole time. Connecting the dots between all the various genres. Throw this on Get Phoqued!
237 Minute LIVE Mix (569mb file/320K CBR) Nick Nice-Cocktails in the Conservatory 1.25.13
January 27, 2013 11:16 AM PST
What's the cure for the darkest, coldest days of winter in Wisconsin? Throwing a party in the 80+ degree, perfectly humid, Olbrich Gardnes Conservatory. Cocktails in the Conservatory is an event that happens every winter and I can honestly say it's one of my favorites. Where else can you feel like you've visited a tropical paradise along with good beats & delicious drinks? I was dj'ng directly in front of the carnivorous plants and they were clearly feeding off the energy off the dancefloor that developed in front of them later in the evening. As an added bonus I had many exotic bugs crawling on my & my equipment. I chose not to kill them since it felt wrong to kill a bug that might not be native to Wisconsin. All in all a great event.
Musically this goes from chill to dancefloor ready sounds & everything inbetween. Enjoy!
240 Minute LIVE Mix (575.4mb file/320k CBR) Nick Nice-Opening for James Murphy @Majestic (1.24.13)
January 25, 2013 08:39 AM PST
It was an honor to open up for the legendary man behind LCD Soundsystem, James Murphy. I tried to set the mood up for his vinyl-heavy set that he played after me & suffice to say it was a non-stop dance party. Such an amazing night for me and a pleasure to dj with such a nice fellow music-obsessive. Thanks to all who came out!
131 Minute LIVE Mix (315.5mb file/320k CBR) Nick Nice-Kid Disco 1.5.13

Bubbles, beats & beer...there's nothing quite like Kid Disco. Throw this mix on & you & your kids will have the perfect all day dance party. Disco, 80's, club classics & guilty pleaure dance hits are all in the mix. Enjoy!
188 Minute LIVE Mix (453.1mb file/320k CBR) Nick Nice and Wyatt Agard-Get Phoqued! 1.9.13
January 10, 2013 09:54 AM PST
Solid undergound house vibes from start to finish as Wyatt Agrad joined me on the decks for this month's edition of Get Phoqued! We basically traded off every half hour or so and had a stellar evening. Hope everyone digs our set.
222 Minute LIVE Mix (532.7mb file/320k CBR) Nick Nice and Mike Carlson-DECADANCE Part 2 (1970s-1990s)
January 07, 2013 09:02 AM PST
Part 2 from our NYE party at the Majestic Theatre (in Madison, WI). DECADANCE covered 100+ years of dance music throughout the evening. More on the classic tip rather than undergound side of things but all about the party vibe! Here's part 2 where we work our way through the 1970's-1990's and was essentially all music videos as well. Enjoy!!
154 Minute LIVE Mix (354.2mb file/320k CBR) Nick Nice-Mad Men Holiday Soirée 2012 (late set)
January 03, 2013 06:21 PM PST
Our annual Mad Men Holiday Soirée at the beautiful Majestic Theatre (in Madison, WI) was a smashing success. This is my late set of dance tunes from 1958-66 or so, the dancefloor just kept on going all the way until the end! Diggign a bit deeper with a few organ jams thrown in for good measure here as well. Dig it!
79 Minute LIVE Mix (182.8mb file/320k CBR) Nick Nice & Mike Carlson-DECADANCE (1900s-1960s)
January 02, 2013 06:50 AM PST
For NYE 2012-2013 it seemed like a great idea to celebrate 100+ years of dance music. The Majestic Theatre (in Madison, Wisconsin) was built in 1906 and has seen it's fair share of dance parties in it's long history as an entertainment venue. For this event we began in the 1900's & steadily moved our way forward as the night advanced. The first part of the set is interesting since the recording technologies of the time were quite primitve & thus there's a serious lack of bass or fidelity. As we progressed into the 1950's it was like going from black & white to technicolor as the frequenices opened up. This is the first part of the night covering the 1900's-1960's. Dig it! 148 Minute LIVE Mix (356.1mb file/320k CBR) Nick Nice-Mad Men Holiday Soirée 2012 (set 1)
December 28, 2012 10:35 AM PST
Our annual Mad Men Holiday Soirée at the Majestic Theatre in Madison, WI was an absolutely magical evening. 500+ people with every single person dressed up & done up in style. I played 3 sets and almost 4 hours of music from 1958-1966 and had a blast doing so since I rarely play music like this. This set is essentially a non-stop 60's dance party full of hits both well-known & obscure. I know you'll all dig it!
46 minute LIVE mix (106.9mb file/320k CBR) Dixon-Live @ King Club 9.1.02 (Madison, WI)December 18, 2012 07:16 AM PST
A classic live set from way back in the day. My friend Brad & I brought a lot of dj's to Madison who would later go on to international fame. We brought Dixon over in 2001 & suffice to say everyone was blown away by his music, dj skills & his down to earth attittude. This set was from his return visit on a perfect Sunday night in the now defunct King Club. I vividly remember the entire place dancing non-stop from start to finish. One of those magical evenings you never forget & make you realize why you love music in the first place. Enjoy!
122 Minute Live mix (247.4mb file/268k VBR) Nick Nice-Kid Disco (12.14.12)
December 17, 2012 10:42 AM PST
Looking for a 3 hour non-stop dance party to keep the kids happy? This will do it. All their Kid Disco faves are on here in a live mix from the first Kid Disco of the 2012-13 season held at The Great Dane-Hilldale. And yes this mix marks the first time I've ever played Gangnam Style as well. Historic. Enjoy!
171 Minute LIVE Mix (411.1mb file/320k CBR) Nick Nice-Daft Punk vs LCD Soundsystem (Live at Majestic Theatre in Madison, WI 12.14.12)
December 17, 2012 07:24 AM PST
The rules for this absolutely epic 4+ hour dance party were simple... -Original tracks by either artist. -Solo or side projects. -Remixes done by either artist or individual members. -Songs from any of the record labels both artists run.
All mixed live on the fly by yours truly. Suffice to say it was an amazingly fun night as it was a blast to mix all those tracks together while keeping the dancefloor energy going solid for 4 hours. Hope you dig it!
4+ hour LIVE Mix (566.6mb file/320K CBR) Nick Nice-Get Phoqued! (11.14.12)November 15, 2012 07:44 AM PST
Feels good to get back to my old stomping grounds where my formative years of dj'ng began at the Cardinal in Madison, WI. My new monthly night, Get Phoqued, happens the 2nd Wednesday of each month and is all about underground music with an open-minded attitude geared directly for the dancefloor. Inspired by my daily dance party marathons with my son Maceo. Phoque is the French word for seal & I used one of his building blocks for the flyer. Enjoy the ride!
217 minute LIVE mix (498.4mb file/320k CBR) Nick Nice & Wyatt Agard-Halloween 2012 @CardinalNovember 02, 2012 08:32 AM PDT
Halloween in Madison, Wisconsin is a week long non-stop party that begins about a week before Oct 31st & culminates on Halloween. There's truly no place in the world that celebrates Halloween on the level that we do here. This is the early part of the night from what was a mindblowingly fun night. Packed dancefloor right from the start, amazing costumes & good vibes all night long.
122 Minute LIVE Mix (292.8mb File/320k CBR) Nick Nice-Live @ L'Appart (Poitiers, France) 10.20.12October 26, 2012 08:23 AM PDT
Took a quick jaunt back to my old stomping grounds in Paris & spent a weekend in one of my favorite citites in France, Poitiers. Always a good vibe there with minimal sleep & loads of champagne. This is my set from a beautiful little bar called L'Apart. It recently opened in the center of the city amidst the tiny roads & cobblestone streets. I dj'd in by far the smallest dj 'booth' known to man. You could neither stand nor sit but thankfully the endless glasses of Dom Perignon & Moet as well as old & new friends who all came out despite the shit weather made that aspect totally irrelevant. I dropped a nice long set of bartime grooves that builds as the night & party got a bit crazier. Yet another amazing time in France!
207 minute LIVE mix (497mb file/320k CBR) Nick Nice-Live @ La Luna 6.9.07 (Poitiers, France)October 09, 2012 04:18 PM PDT
A classic mix from a magical little club in a cool town about an hour & a half outside of Paris. 100% live with a packed dancefloor from start to finish (which was about 9 am as we locked the doors & told the cops not to come in!). The last 15 months in Wisconsin has been like living in a pressure cooker. It's been a non-stop intense ride for all of us here. I've been through so much & didn't even realize just how it's all affected me. This mix is the culmination of one of the most intense weeks of my life as well as a welcome to summer. Words can't describe what I've been through so I'll just let the music do the talking here. And I think you'll all dig it! May 27, 2012 01:26 PM PDT
To say Donna Summer had an impact on me as a kid is an understatement. I didn't even realize how much so until she passed away. Listening to those records & cassettes over & over are clearly one of the reasons I became a dj. I might not have realized it at the time but the fact that her albums all flowed together like a dj set was probably one of the main reasons I listened to them so much. The day after she died I dj'd at Natt Spil (in Madison, WI) on an absolutely perfect summer night. The windows were open & good vibes were in the air. This is pretty much a full on disco mix with a bit of my usual eclectic cuts I throw in at Natt Spil. Some of the mixes are choppy due to me chatting with people (the booth is wide open there) but overall I'm happy with the way my set ended up. I never really know what I'm going to play until the night unfolds & this was a special one. RIP Donna Summer. (pic is from a mural by Serve One who painted it literally right after she died. I love playing opening sets & literally crafting the vibe from scratch to create a killer party. I was asked to kick things off for the huge Rusko show (along with Eliot Lipp) at the Orpheum Theatre in Madison. Suffice to say it was a massively insane & fun night from start to finish. This mix will definitely get your party started properly! Huge thanks to the Orpheum, Prime Social Group & the Majestic Theatre for putting together such a great party.

February 19, 2012 11:49 AM PST
It was an epic battle for the 1st ever election to select the Mayor of the Decks...the clear winner? Everyone on the packed dancefloor literally from start to finish! Chicago legend Zebo made the trek up to Madison for a seriously killer party. I kicked things off and we then switched off every half hour... suffice to say we went all over the place musically and it was one of the best parties I've been a part of for ages. Hope you all enjoy it!

Global warming has caused our winter in Wisconsin to be more or less non-existant, with the exception of a few days here & there. I made this mix during one of those crisp cold days where it looks like there's a smoky haze emerging from the snowbanks...Diverse wintry vibes to heat you up, with or without your favorite libations as an accompaniment. It was THE Holiday Party of the year, our Mad Men Holiday Soirée @ Madison's historic Majestic Theatre was truly a trip back in time. The entire crowd was dressed in vintage attire & it really felt like you were transported back to the early 1960's. By popular demand here's my set from the party. A nice compliment to the afterparty set with much more familiar & dancefloor-friendly songs (and a few crossover ones between the two mixes). I stictched together my 2 sets from the party. Hope you enjoy it!

On December 17th 2011 we held our 1st annual Mad Men Holiday Soirée at the historic (built 1906) & beautiful Majestic Theatre in Madison, Wisconsin. In preparing for my set that evening I dove headfirst into sort of a forgotten era of great music circa 1958-1966. I literally just threw this mix together & ended up realizing it basically would have been a set I'd drop at an afterparty if I had been alive & dj'ng back in 1966. Throw this on for the perfect party soundtrack to keep your guests happy. Enjoy the trip....

Classic mix from 2002 that I unearthed from my archives. I had a period of my life where I spent a lot of time listening to an AM radio station that was geared primarily to the 65+ crowd, featuring the 'Music of Your Life'. The ads on the station were hilarious, one of them began with the opening line, 'if you have teeth...'. They played all the standards you would expect and had guest dj's such as legendary game show host Wink Martindale. They would also occasionally throw in some more obscure songs here & there. I had the idea of slipping into their studio and whipping together a cd-length mix for all the listeners. This is what I cam up with. I don't have a tracklist for this mix anymore but in features the following artists & more...Henry Mancini, Frank Sinatra, Sarah Vaughan, Ella Fitzgerald, Françoise Hardy, Serge Gainsbourg, Matthew Herbert & Nancy Sinatra.

This summer has been out of control hot. Hot enough to make even brain-dead Republicans believe that Global Warming (or Climate Fuck as I prefer to call it) isn't a hoax. The best way to beat the heat? Delicious cold beer, good beats & a nice barbecue. This is basically the soundtrack you'll need for it. It's a nice long eclectic mix ranging from rare grooves, jazz, funk, disco, soul & house. Pop open a refreshing beer & enjoy!

To say the ambiance around the Capitol in Madison, Wisconsin has been charged lately is an understatement. Protest all day, party all night is how we do it here! The atmosphere in the bars in the area has been insane. This is my set for a killer party hosted by the Majestic Theatre (115 King St.) located in the heart of the action. It happened literally just a few hours after another massive rally of 100,000+ people. I had the pleasure to open up for Designer Drugs and drop some dancefloor heat. Hope you all enjoy my set, everyone there was having a blast.

If you need a SERIOUS Daft Punk fix this mix is for you. What started as just a random idea turned into an amazing party at the Majestic Theatre in Madison, WI (usa). We projected the original Tron on a giant movie screen while I spun an entire set of Daft Punk. The rules were simple, anything by Daft Punk, solo or side projects, remixes & original sample sources were fair game. November 15, 2010 12:12 PM PST
Glowsticks? Check. Rave whistles? Check. People on Ecstasy? Check. Dodgy mixing of early/mid 90's techno classics on vinyl? Check. Amazing dance party? For real!

A mix of mine from April 2005. The 1st in a series of requests for classic mixes that I'll be putting back online. Newly remastered as well. I made this one on the day Pope John Paul II died. I'm no fan of the Pope but the energy in the air that day was definitely more than a bit trippy. This was one of those spontaneous mixes that resulted from a lack of sleep and a hazy afternoon. Mixed in the pre-Scratch Live days with vinyl & cd's as well. I wanted to put the beats back into beatification. October 21, 2010 07:59 AM PDT
My opening set for the absolutely epic & mindblowing Deadmau5 show in Madison,WI. Arguably the biggest electronic event to hit the area since Daft Punk made their U.S. debut here in 1996 (in Spring Green, WI). My set ended up being a lot longer than anticipated due to Deadmau5's flight being delayed. So I played everything from deep house, techno, dubstep, electro & a few classics thrown in for good measure. As always it's mixed 100% live using Scratch Live. No pre-made mixes or anything. Just proper dj'ng and going with the flow of the night.

A unique mix for kids that adults will enjoy too. So in addition to dj'ing a ton I have been babysitting my 2 nieces quite a bit. They're 2 1/2 and 1 year old and after hearing Barney's annoying drivel one time too many I decided to take action. I put together an odd selection of music and dialogue from my childhood as well as things that were just outright bizarre from well before my time. I wanted to make something that children would enjoy but adults would dig as well either from the irony or grooviness of the songs. From Johnny Cash with Oscar the Grouch to Mr. Rogers to the Pointer Sisters to Carole King to Helen Reddy to Bert & Ernie and lots of the Sesame Street crew. This selection has it all. If you have a kid I'm sure they'll dig it, my nieces loved it with the older one dancing around to many of the songs. And they now hate Barney! Frobble is a generic term for plastic bits and pieces of toys. It seemed perfect for all the musical scraps that I used to make this mix. It's by far the oddest mix I have put together ever.

Nothing sounds better on a hot summer night than deep, dubby disco... Actually I like deep, dubby disco grooves all year round! This mix is a nice long set of some of my favorite underground disco (new & old), along with some detroit-style techno and general dubby goodness with a few poppy surprises thrown in for good measure. Perfect to throw on and have a delicious cold beer and smokey treat of your liking. Sit back and enjoy 2.5 hours of tasty grooves....

Classic 90's house, techno & club cuts inspired by my years as a resident dj at the Queen club in Paris. From 1993-1995 I was a resident DJ there and it was pretty much at Queen that I cut my teeth as a dj. I was hired by none other than David Guetta who was the artistic director there at the time in addition to being a dj for some of the special events there. My nights consisted of 7-9 hour sets, (all vinyl of course!), totally up for it crowd, insane dancefloor energy, dj booth literally on the dancefloor (with no booth monitors for the first 6 months or so!) and loads of good music that's slipped through the cracks in the mp3/laptop era of dj'ng we're in now. It was also the birth of the whole 'French Touch' house scene and you'd see all the young producers out on the dancefloor soaking up the vibes.

Live mix from my friend Wyatt Agard's awesome bday party. Opening up for Moldover. Ranging from deep disco to serious bangers. April 22, 2010 09:00 AM PDT
SWITCH! is an idea that my friends and I came up with one smoke-filled evening... The idea is that it's a way to have some fun on the rare occasions when we're all dj'ng in the same block of town and to have neighborhood bars work together rather than against each other. Since the venues we play at are usually the only bars open in our neighborhood it's a pretty easy idea for people to follow. The premise is that starting at around 11pm we begin a rotation between the places we're spinning at. We each leave our 'home' bars to go play a short set at each other's bars, allowing enough time to have a drink at each establishment. No flash drives allowed, you have to use each person's unique setup and attempt to figure out their library organization as well as hopefully not repeating any tracks. So at 11pm, Mike Carlson leaves the downtown Great Dane to head over to Natt Spil where Nate VPS is playing. Nate then heads up to Maduro and then I head down to the Dane. We continue the rotation until we each return to our 'home' bars. The whole process somehow takes longer than you'd think, so the 11pm start time allows us enough time to return 'home' at a reasonable hour, preferably well before last call! Patrons can either choose to follow us around or stick at one spot and catch all 3 of us. No matter what it's always a blast and one of the reasons that makes Madison such a great place to live. It's also a reason why Sunday nights are my favorite night in town. This is the mix from Maduro, see if you can figure out who's dj'ng by the song selections. Hope you all enjoy it and follow me on Twitter to be alerted when the next one is, we often decide them the day of. http://twitter.com/nicknicemadison

The mashup lunacy seems unstoppable these days. Nothing is sacred and hopefully the growing mashup craze will lead to a change in our archaic copyright laws.

Time for a vintage rave set that's been rescued from the dead!
June 07, 2006 03:16 PM PDT
Vintage Mix from 1993! Many people have been asking me for some of my old mixtapes so I figured now was the time to start to share them before they deteriorate completely. This is a mix from 1993 when I was living in Paris and had just begun to dj at the infamous Queen club on the Champs-Elysées. It includes lots of the big anthems at the time like Gat Decor,Hardfloor, Nightcrawlers, Capricorn/20Hz, Transformation, Zero Gravity & more... This is taken from the original cassette tape. I made it with 1 turntable and my 4 track tape recorder (I didn't have a full dj setup back then and it wasn't even a Technics 1200). I did all the mixes from the 4 track onto 1 master tape so the sound quality is not so hot. And we won't even talk about some of the mixes!! But it's full of loads of fun memories nonetheless. 47 Minute Mix (128k/43mb) French Invasion 1 (b side)

Vintage mix from 1993! The b-side to a classic tape of mine. Includes tracks by Capella, Jaydee, Beyond, The Good Men, Dance 2 Trance, Polygon Window (Aphex Twin), Illuminate & more... As with the a side it's a vintage mix so the sound quality and mixes are a bit spotty. But the music is still fun! 46 Minute Mix (128k/42.7mb) Nick Nice-Thundersnow

Thundersnow! Ever elusive but frighteningly powerful when you experience it. Come to Wisconsin in the winter to find out how much fun Climate Fuck (formerly known as Global Warming) really is... In the meantime you can enjoy my banging mix of Thundersnow anthems. Made during an actual Thundersnowstorm. Mixed live on 2 turntables using Scratch Live. No computer edits. Just pure explosive mayhem! 88 Minute Live mix (121mb file/192k cbr) NICK NICE

I was originally going to edit this down to a 1 or 2 hour portion of the night, but I'm not even sure if/when I've had a full dancefloor right from the first beat of the first song. So I figured if the absolutely amazing crowd could dance their asses off for 5 hours straight the whole set should be heard in it's entirety. Who cares if it's a huge file?! There's some serious dance music history from the past 30 years spread throughout my mix. It's all about connecting the dots between cutting edge dance music from the past, present & future.

The University of Wisconsin-Madison Memorial Union Terrace is seriously one of the best places on earth to be in the summertime. When the sun is setting on the lake, a great band or dj is playing and the beer is flowing freely, there's nothing quite like it. As a local & an alumni I've had way too many crazy times down there for many years. That being said every time I get booked there it always seems to get rained out. This year I got my set started a bit earlier than schedule and actually got to play a full set before the floodgates opened for Andy Butler (aka Hercules & Love Affair). I ended up playing a set of a lot of my all-time faves, summer classics and tracks that remind me of the Union. Hope you enjoy the mix. All part of an awesome Summer '09 thus far...
